Basic Rope Rescue for Theater Stage Hands

Basic Rope Rescue Skills for Theater Stage Hands

Stagehand workers are extremely skilled in rigging and operating in their at height environments.  However, accidents and medical emergencies can occur in an instant, and in many cases immediate action can make a huge difference in the outcome of this incidents.

In 2014, All Hands Fire Training developed a training class at the request of stagehands in New York City.  That same year we delivered our first Basic Rope Rescue to workers with Theatrical Stage Employees, Local 1 – I.A.T.S.E. New York City Stagehands.

Since that time, we have provided a number of these programs in several different theaters in New York City.  The attendees were stagehands from theaters all over New York City, including:

  • Lyric Theater
  • Madison Square Garden
  • Radio City Music Hall
  • Saint James Theater
  • Beacon Theater
  • Herschfeld Theater
  • Ed Sullivan Theater
  • JAZZ at Lincoln Center
  • Shubert Theater
  • Winter Garden Theater
  • Gerald Lynch Theater at John Jay College
  • Barklays Center
  • and others…

Our Basic Rope Rescue training class was developed for stage workers in theaters and industrial settings.

It is 16-hours (2 full days) in length.  It focuses on workers who may have some level of responsibility during an emergency (after calling 9-1-1) to take action and assist or render aid to an injured stage worker.

Our programs includes:

  • Classroom/Lecture session covering applicable OSHA, ANSI and related standards. It also offers a brief overview on equipment and proper applications / uses.
  • Tool / Equipment hands-on review and demonstration
  • Anchoring options
  • Ascending and Descending
  • Hauling options
  • Injured workers on rope / in harnesses (conscious and unconscious)
