THERMAL IMAGING CAMERA TRAINING
Our Thermal Imaging Camera training program is designed to provide the basic 
knowledge and confidence required to use this high-tech tool effectively and safely in the field. Training sessions are geared to the level of the firefighters that are being trained, enabling them to better understand and feel comfortable with their thermal imager. The possibilities for applications of the tool are numerous once the firefighter has received this thorough training.
Our training program consists of two sessions, carried out over two consecutive days.
First Session – In the Classroom:
(Pre-requisite for the hands-on session)
- Brief History of the Thermal Imager
- Theory of Thermal Imaging
- Safety
- Tactical Considerations
- Navigation Techniques
- Care and Maintenance
Second Session – Live Fire Applications:
Selected firefighters are given the opportunity to apply the knowledge gained during the first session with emphasis on:
- Proper interpretation of the image presented by your specific thermal imager, and its relationship to firefighting
- Limitations of the thermal imager and how to overcome them
- Navigation
- Search and rescue using the thermal imager
- Tactics
Instructors gear training to adapt to the level of experience and training that the firefighter possesses. This allows the firefighters to feel comfortable and better understand the thermal imager and its unlimited applications while building confidence.
Thousands of firefighters in hundreds of fire departments have attended this program, from both paid and volunteer departments from the United States, Canada and Europe.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTORS:
All Hands Fire Equipment & Training is proud to offer this Thermal Imaging Camera Training Program through our cooperative association with the experts at SAFE-IR, Inc. Together we are dedicated to one mission: providing quality training to the members of the fire service, who dedicate themselves to the protection of lives and property, wherever they may serve. Our student-oriented approach places strong emphasis on instructor-student interaction in both classroom and hands-on training. We feel that adapting our training to the experience level of the firefighters to be instructed creates a positive environment for learning and promotes confidence in handling thermal imagers. With the introduction of state-of-the-art technology to the fire service, we can offer experienced instruction in real-world settings with an emphasis on safe application by the firefighter. This program has provided training to hundreds of departments in 48 states in the United States and also in Canada and Europe.
SAFE-IR, Inc. instructors came together to begin educating the fire service about thermal imaging in 1996. Instructors collectively have varied backgrounds with a wide range of educational experience. But most importantly they possess over 250 years of firefighting experience. All serve in career departments around the country, in every rank from firefighter to chief. Most also have backgrounds with volunteer departments. Affiliations with both career and volunteer departments allow them to gear their training to the different applications and level of experience associated with the department they are training.
The instructors are fire service instructors who have taught a variety of subjects, including Search & Rescue, Engine and Ladder Company operations, Confined Space and High Angle Rope evolutions, along with Firefighter Survival and Rapid Intervention. Several are frequent lecturers on these subjects and often have been published in the popular fire service periodicals. They also serve as instructors at the Fire Department instructors Conference, (FDIC) and Firehouse Exposition.
The curriculum has been developed with the input of all our instructors and is designed with the firefighter and his safety as the highest priority. Our training program is also continually reviewed and revised to keep pace with ever-changing technology and the unpredictable tasks of the firefighter. “The application of the tool is only limited by your imagination” is our guiding principle for making our program an ongoing learning experience for everyone involved. As a direct result of our instructors’ expertise and experience, the SAFE-IR, Inc. Thermal Imaging Training Program has been acclaimed as one of the “best training programs available to the fire service!”
