Boat Familiarization and Basic Operations Training
All Hands Fire offers a program titled Boat Familiarization and Basic Operations. This class was developed based on the high volume of boats that AllHandsFire.com sells, and offers the customers basic training for operating these type of inflatable rescue boats.
The 1-day program is delivered as both a classroom sesssion and hands-on and covers the following:
- Overview, Nomenclature, Key Features and Specifications of the customer’s boat
- Boat motor, Boat handling and Operations (Steering, Maneuvering, Reverse)
- Boat operations in urban flooding conditions
- Maintenance and Troubleshooting
- Trailering, Launching and Retrieval
- Operator and Deckhand’s responsibilities
- Required and Recommended Equipment
- Mission preparations – staffing and their roles, PPE, support equipment
- General Boat Operations – In-Water Basic Operations, Maneuvering, Steering, Reverse
STUDENT CLASS SIZE: For the classroom session and on-shore session, class size is limited to 20 students. For the basic boat operations session, in most cases we can accommodate approximately nine (+/-) students for their (1) boat (anticipating three students in the boat at one time for a 30-45 minute operational session).
NOTE:
- The Agency Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) is responsible to ensure that their members are trained and equipment to handle emergencies and incidents within their scope of responsibility. The AHJ is ultimately responsible to ensure that their agency meets NFPA 1006, NFPA 1670 and any other related or relevant standard, guideline or rule.
- It is highly recommended that the customer consider requiring their members to have Swiftwater Rescue Technician-level prior to operating a water rescue boat.
- It is highly recommended that the customer consider requiring their members to obtain a Boater’s Safety Certificate prior to operating a water rescue boat.
- During the boat operation skills session, all students will be required to wear an approved PFD and water rescue helmet.

It is NOT intended to provide the student with emergency search and rescue operations skills or emergency responder survival skills. Specific Job Performance Requirements (JPR’s) for Water Rescue and Emergency Boat Operations can be found in NFPA 1006 Standards for Technical Rescue Personnel Professional Qualifications, Chapter 16: Surface Water Rescue, Chapter 17: Swift Water Rescue, Chapter 21: Watercraft Rescue and Chapter 22: Floodwater Rescue.
