ABOUT MICHAEL

Michael Terpak has been in the fire service for 43 years, having spent the last 36 years with the Jersey City Fire Department where he recently retired as a Deputy Chief and City-Wide Tour Commander. 

Throughout his career he has worked in the city’s Lafayette and Greenville areas with Engines 10 & 17, Ladder 12, Rescue 1, Chief of the city’s 2nd Battalion and the former Chief in-charge of the city’s Training Division. In addition to the above, he was also the High-Rise Training Coordinator for Jersey City. 

Terpak travels extensively around the country lecturing on fire/rescue topics. Chief Terpak holds a BS degree in Fire Safety Administration from the City University of New Jersey and is an adjunct professor for the Fire Science Technology program at Sussex County Community College. 

 He is the author of five best-selling books, “Fire Ground Size-Up” , “Assessment Center Strategy and Tactics” ,“Fire Ground Operational Guides” Assessment Center Management and Supervision” and “Fire Officer Oral Assessment Study Guides.”

7 Hours

This program is a comprehensive review of the 15-Size-Up factors necessary for an efficient, effective and safe operation. This program is designed for a current or future Company and Chief fire officer. This is NOT a basic program! Utilizing the acronym COAL TWAS WEALTHS , this seminar is presented as 7-hour seminar.

FIREGROUND SIZEUP: OCCUPANCY SPECIFIC

3 Hours

Each of the listed occupancy/buildings is presented as 3-hour lecture or an all-day interactive workbook seminar. Each class will cover size-up factors “ specific to the occupancy listed“, as well as suggested strategies and tactics for the first due engine, ladder and chief officer.

MODERN FIREGROUND OPERATIONS

7 Hours

This program is a 7-hour comprehensive review of fire department operations in Light-Weight designed buildings, followed by a comprehensive review of the NIST and UL information relating to Transitional Fire Attack. The new suggested strategy “ hitting it hard from the yard” has become the most heated topic in the history of the fire service!

STRUCTURAL COLLAPSE OF FIRE DAMAGED BUILDINGS

Part 2 of Operations in Lightweight Buildings  |  3 Hours

In conjunction with friend and mentor FDNY Chief Vincent Dunn’s book, “ Collapse of Burning Buildings“, this 3 – hour program reviews the different classes of construction and the inherent occupancies where collapse is most probable. In this seminar we will discuss the different types of construction with the fire spread and collapse concerns for each. Through a number of case studies and video footage, we provide each student with an “ anticipation guide” to protect their members.

FIRE DEPARTMENT OPERATIONS IN HOARDING CONDITIONS

3 Hours

This concern is NOT limited to urban firefighting. Fire Departments from rural, suburban, and urban areas need to be aware of the concerns and how to effectively and safely operate in buildings full of accumulated items. Identified as one of the “ most dangerous buildings we can enter into,” this 3 -hour program is designed to prepare you for the unexpected.

MAYDAY & URGENT RADIO OPERATIONS

3 Hours

This is a three hour program designed to establish procedure with your members for a MAY-DAY or URGENT radio transmission. In this seminar we will identify the difficulties, the parameters, the difference between the messages, as well as when and how to transmit a message. Through the use of actual case studies, we will present your department with a model SOP for a realistic approach to this subject.

COMMAND & CONTROL THROUGH USE OF THE FD RADIO

3 Hours

This is a 3-hour comprehensive program that focuses on a uniformed/informative and disciplined approach toward scene management and control through use of the FD radio. In this seminar we provide you with a scripted outline for the initial radio report, the alarm status report, and the incident scene progress report. Additionally, we will focus on identifying building construction, floor/occupancy designation, and discipline needed in your radio use. By reviewing actual radio transmission clips and case studies, we will provide your department with a uniformed approach on what to say, how to say it and how it should impact your fire ground operations.

DEVELOPMENT & USE OF FIREGROUND TACTICAL COMMAND BOARDS

3 Hours

This three-hour lecture/demonstration will take the student through the design and use of a Tactical Worksheet and Command Tracking Board. Students will be able to apply tactical worksheets through a series of mock fireground scenarios utilizing their own department’s resources.
