COURSE OVERVIEW

Autism Awareness for First Responders is a 90-minute training program designed to help fire, EMS, rescue, and law enforcement personnel better understand and effectively interact with individuals on the autism spectrum. The course explores the characteristics of Autism Spectrum Disorder, including communication challenges, sensory sensitivities, and behavioral patterns that may impact emergency response.

Students will learn practical strategies for recognizing communication barriers, applying de-escalation techniques, and adapting their approach to improve outcomes during high-stress incidents. Delivered by a 30-year emergency services veteran and parent of an autistic child, this program provides real-world insight and actionable techniques to enhance responder safety, build community trust, and ensure more inclusive and effective emergency operations.
