COURSE OVERVIEW

All Hands Fire offers comprehensive training programs designed to educate firefighters, hazardous materials personnel, and emergency responders on the identification, hazards, and response strategies associated with lithium-ion battery emergencies.  Most courses are instructed by FDNY Special Operations HazMat personnel with extensive real-world operational experience, providing students with practical insights gained from responding to complex battery incidents.

These in-depth classroom programs establish a strong foundation in lithium-ion battery construction, chemistry, electrical concepts, and failure mechanisms before progressing into real-world response considerations involving consumer electronics, electric vehicles (EVs), and battery energy storage systems (BESS).

Students will learn how to recognize the warning signs of battery failure, identify and interrupt thermal runaway, evaluate hazards, conduct risk assessments, select appropriate suppression and containment strategies, and operate safely in environments impacted by lithium-ion battery failures.

The Technician-level program expands on these core concepts through advanced instruction in fire suppression operations, hazardous materials response, incident risk assessment, tactical decision-making, and evolving industry best practices.  Graduates will leave the program with the knowledge and confidence to safely and effectively manage complex lithium-ion battery emergencies across a wide range of response environments.

PROGRAM OPTIONS

FIRE DEPARTMENT CONSIDERATIONS FOR LITHIUM-ION BATTERIES

This awareness-level program provides emergency responders with a practical introduction to lithium-ion battery technology, associated hazards, and emergency response considerations.  The course examines battery chemistry, common failure mechanisms, thermal runaway, and response strategies for incidents involving micro-mobility devices, consumer electronics, electric vehicles (EVs), and residential and commercial battery energy storage systems (BESS).  Students will gain the knowledge to recognize hazards, conduct effective risk assessments, and understand current firefighting and safety best practices for lithium-ion battery emergencies.

LITHIUM-ION BATTERY EMERGENCIES: OPERATIONS

4 hours

This 4-hour operations-level program provides emergency responders with essential knowledge of lithium-ion battery hazards and safe response strategies.  Developed by FDNY Special Operations HazMat instructors with real-world experience, the course is delivered as instructor-led classroom instruction covering battery construction, thermal runaway, electrical hazards, PPE, suppression, and containment concepts.  Students will learn to recognize hazards, perform size-up, and apply safe mitigation strategies for incidents involving consumer electronics, electric vehicles (EVs), and energy storage systems.

LITHIUM-ION BATTERY EMERGENCIES: TECHNICIAN

8 hours

This comprehensive 8-hour technician-level program provides firefighters, hazmat technicians, and emergency responders with an in-depth understanding of lithium-ion battery technology, hazards, and advanced response strategies.  Developed by FDNY Special Operations HazMat instructors with extensive real-world experience, the course explores battery construction, chemistry, thermal runaway, fire operations, hazmat response, risk assessment, and tactical decision-making.  Through classroom instruction and live demonstrations, students will develop the knowledge and confidence to safely assess, mitigate, and manage complex lithium-ion battery incidents involving consumer electronics, electric vehicles (EVs), and battery energy storage systems (BESS).

SKILL MODULES

Our lithium-ion battery training programs incorporate a series of skill modules that are presented at varying levels of depth and complexity based on the specific course. Each program is designed to provide the appropriate balance of instructor-led classroom instruction, ensuring students develop the knowledge and understanding necessary for their level of training.

These skill modules are integrated throughout our comprehensive programs to support progressive learning, allowing departments to build capability across a range of operational topics while aligning with specific training objectives.
